GPD WIN 5 Specifications Revealed: AMD Strix Halo Handheld With External Battery and Advanced Cooling
The complete specifications of the GPD WIN 5 have been revealed by YouTuber The Phawx (PhawxTV). This upcoming handheld gaming console is based on AMD’s Strix Halo platform and is designed to deliver high sustained performance with a strong focus on thermal management.
The GPD WIN 5 does not include a built-in battery, with the internal space instead dedicated to a dual-fan, quad-heatpipe cooling system designed to manage the thermal load of Strix Halo processors. In early demonstrations, the handheld sustained Black Myth: Wukong at 55W to 61W, showing that it can deliver desktop-class performance in a compact, portable form factor.
The system runs entirely on external power. Users can connect an optional 80Wh battery module or operate the handheld through direct wired input. While this reduces portability, it avoids the performance limitations typically associated with battery-driven systems.
Two processor configurations will be available. The flagship version features the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395, while a more cost-effective option uses the Ryzen AI Max 385. The 385 includes eight CPU cores instead of twelve but retains the same 32-core GPU, ensuring comparable graphics performance.
The handheld is built around a 7-inch display with a native horizontal layout, offering 1920×1080 resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, 6ms response time, and full sRGB coverage. Touch support for up to ten points adds further flexibility.
For memory, buyers can choose between 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB of LPDDR5x-8000 RAM. Storage expansion includes an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0×4 slot, an SD 3.0 UHS-I card reader, and a dedicated BIWIN Mini SSD slot supporting PCIe 4.0×1 speeds up to 1600MB/s.
Connectivity includes two USB-C ports with DisplayPort Alt support. One port delivers up to 40Gbps bandwidth, enabling use with high-speed external devices and displays. The controller setup includes Hall effect triggers, a 2000MHz polling rate joystick, and programmable rear buttons for customization.
With its cooling-focused design and external battery support, the GPD WIN 5 aims to provide stable, high-power gaming performance in handheld form. GPD is expected to confirm launch details and pricing in the coming weeks.
