GPD WIN Max 3 Pre-Orders Open With AMD Strix Halo and 9.06-Inch 165Hz AMOLED Display

GPD is bringing a new approach to high-performance handheld gaming PCs with the WIN Max 3, and pre-orders are now open. The new machine combines AMD's Strix Halo platform with a large 9.06-inch AMOLED display, dual M.2 storage support, and a modular design that lets users change the battery and cooling hardware.

At 815 grams, the GPD WIN Max 3 is considerably larger than many conventional gaming handhelds, but that extra size is being used for more powerful hardware and a wider range of features. The system is powered by an AMD Strix Halo processor and uses LPDDR5X-8000 memory, giving it the kind of hardware configuration normally associated with compact gaming PCs rather than traditional handheld consoles.

GPD has included two M.2 SSD slots, allowing users to install multiple drives instead of relying on a single internal SSD. There is also a microSD Express card reader for removable storage and faster expansion compared with older microSD implementations.

The WIN Max 3 also takes a different approach to power and cooling. The handheld comes with a built-in dual-fan cooling system connected to four heatpipes, while GPD offers an additional dual-fan cooling module. When the additional fan module is installed, the system can unlock performance levels of up to 110W. That figure gives an indication of how aggressively GPD is targeting desktop-class performance in a portable form factor.

The modular design extends to the battery as well. The WIN Max 3 can be fitted with a 97Wh battery module, giving users the option to prioritize battery capacity alongside the system's performance.

GPD has also equipped the handheld with a display that should appeal to both PC gamers and content-focused users. The 9.06-inch panel has a 2400 × 1504 resolution, a 165Hz refresh rate, and uses Real RGB AMOLED technology. It supports HDR10 and can reach up to 1,050 nits of peak brightness. GPD also claims a color shift of less than ΔE 1, while touch and handwriting input are supported.

Gaming controls include a capacitive joystick, Hall-effect linear triggers, customizable L4 and R4 buttons, and a six-axis gyroscope. A 5MP ultra-wide-angle camera is built into the device as well, giving the WIN Max 3 additional functionality beyond gaming.

With Strix Halo hardware, high-speed memory, dual SSD support, modular cooling, and a high-resolution 165Hz AMOLED panel, the GPD WIN Max 3 is positioned as a portable Windows gaming machine that can also serve as a compact PC. Its modular components could make it particularly interesting for users who want more control over performance, cooling, storage, and battery capacity.
