MINISFORUM Launches the MS-A1 Mini Workstation: The World's Smallest and Most Expandable AM5 Platform Mini PC

Today, MINISFORUM has launched a new entry into the mini workstation market, the MS-A1, touted as "the world's smallest and most expandable AM5 platform Mini PC." This new model follows the release of the MS-01 but brings a significant shift in its core architecture, moving from Intel to AMD. As a barebone unit, it comes without memory, hard drive, CPU, or system, allowing users to customize their setup according to their needs.

Compact Yet Powerful Design

The MS-A1 retains a design similar to its predecessor, the MS-01, with dimensions of 187mm in length, 189mm in width, and 48mm in height. This compact form factor makes it an ideal solution for users with limited desk space but demanding performance requirements. Unlike the MS-01, which featured the Intel Core i9-13900H, the MS-A1 is built on the AMD AM5 platform, offering three different processor options: the R7 8700G, R5 8600G, and R5 7600. Currently, only the barebone version is available for purchase, providing flexibility for users to choose their preferred processor.

Internal Expandability

The MS-A1 boasts impressive internal expandability. It comes equipped with dual DDR5 SO-DIMM memory slots that support up to a whopping 96GB of RAM. This level of memory support ensures that the MS-A1 can handle intensive multitasking and demanding applications with ease.

In addition to memory expandability, the MS-A1 offers robust storage options. It supports U.2 hard drives and can accommodate up to four M.2 NVMe SSD solid-state drives. This allows for substantial storage capacity and the possibility of setting up RAID configurations for improved performance and data redundancy.

Comprehensive Connectivity

MINISFORUM has equipped the MS-A1 with a variety of external interfaces to ensure comprehensive connectivity options for users. The front of the device includes two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, a USB 2.0 Type-A port, and a 3.5mm audio jack. These ports provide easy access for peripherals and audio devices.

The rear panel is even more versatile, featuring a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, a USB 2.0 Type-A port, and a USB Type-C port that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and Power Delivery. For video output, the MS-A1 includes an HDMI 2.1 port and a DisplayPort 2.0, allowing users to connect multiple high-resolution monitors.

For network connectivity, the MS-A1 is equipped with dual 2.5GbE network ports, offering reliable and fast wired internet connections. Additionally, the rear panel includes an OCuLink port (PCIe 4.0 x4) for further expandability. The device is powered by a DC5525 19V 12.6A power supply.

Differences from the MS-01

While the MS-A1 shares many similarities with the MS-01, there are some key differences. Notably, the MS-A1 does not include a 10G Ethernet port, which was a feature in the MS-01. Instead, it offers 2.5G Ethernet ports. This change might be a consideration for users requiring higher-speed network capabilities.

Conclusion

With the release of the MS-A1, MINISFORUM continues to push the boundaries of mini workstation design, offering a highly compact and expandable solution built on the AMD AM5 platform. The MS-A1’s robust internal expandability, comprehensive connectivity options, and customizable barebone configuration make it a versatile choice for professionals and enthusiasts looking for powerful performance in a small footprint. As the demand for compact yet powerful computing solutions grows, the MS-A1 is well-positioned to meet the needs of a wide range of users.
