8BitDo Unveils the 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller: A Modern Take on the Classic N64 Design

8BitDo, known for its high-quality retro-inspired gaming accessories, has officially released its latest controller, the 8BitDo 64, overseas this week. Designed to replicate the iconic layout of the Nintendo 64 controller while improving on its ergonomics and functionality, this new Bluetooth controller aims to offer a comfortable and responsive experience for both nostalgic and modern gamers.

A Faithful Yet Modernized Design

The 8BitDo 64 stays true to the original N64 controller’s button layout, ensuring that long-time fans will feel right at home. The size, position, and feel of the C buttons, A/B buttons, and Start button have been carefully replicated to maintain the classic gaming experience. However, 8BitDo has taken steps to refine the overall shape, making it more ergonomic and suitable for extended play sessions.

A major upgrade is the built-in Hall effect joystick. Unlike the notoriously fragile analog stick in the original N64 controllers—prone to wearing out over time—this new design prioritizes longevity and precision. 8BitDo has maintained the original limiter design while adding a concave rubber joystick cap. According to the company, this enhancement eliminates the dreaded loose joystick issue that plagued N64 controllers in the past.

Feature-Packed for Modern Gaming

Beyond its faithful design, the 8BitDo 64 is equipped with modern features that enhance its usability across multiple platforms. The controller supports Bluetooth connectivity, allowing for wireless gameplay, and also includes vibration functionality for added immersion. It is fully compatible with the upcoming Analogue 3D console, a modernized take on N64 hardware, making it an ideal controller choice for retro gaming enthusiasts.

Additionally, the 8BitDo 64 works seamlessly with the Nintendo Switch, including N64 Online games. This gives users an authentic way to enjoy classic Nintendo 64 titles on Nintendo’s latest hardware without compromising on accuracy or comfort.

Availability and Pricing

The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth controller is now available for pre-order overseas, with a suggested retail price of $39.99. Given 8BitDo’s reputation for producing high-quality retro-inspired controllers, demand is expected to be strong among retro gaming fans and collectors.

With a mix of nostalgia and modern improvements, the 8BitDo 64 looks to be a solid option for anyone looking to revisit the classic N64 experience without the drawbacks of aging hardware. As it rolls out across international markets, it will be interesting to see how the community responds to this modernized take on an iconic controller.
