GPD Announces MicroPC 2 With Major Performance Boost and Larger Display

GPD has officially announced the MicroPC 2, marking the first significant update to its rugged mini-laptop series in six years. The original MicroPC launched in 2019 and received a minor update in 2021 with a processor upgrade from Intel Celeron N4100 to N4120. Since then, the lineup has remained largely unchanged—until now.

The MicroPC 2 retains the same design philosophy as its predecessor, focusing on portability, durability, and low-power operation. However, it introduces several notable improvements, including a larger 7-inch display, up from the 6-inch screen on the first-generation model. Despite the increase in screen size, the device remains lightweight, weighing in at 490 grams, roughly 50 grams more than the original.

Under the hood, the MicroPC 2 is powered by the new Intel N250 processor. This 4-core, 4-thread CPU runs at a base frequency of up to 3.8GHz and supports a thermal design power (TDP) ranging from 6W to 15W. At the higher end of the TDP spectrum, GPD claims the CPU offers triple the performance of the previous-generation MicroPC powered by the N4120 chip, making it more suitable for tasks such as mobile office work and multimedia use.

GPD shared Geekbench 6 CPU benchmark data, showing that the single-core performance of the N250 surpasses the multi-core performance of the N4120. The company also compared the new processor’s performance to a range of older chips, including the N6000, m3-8100Y, and Z8750, as well as the CPU reportedly used in the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The results show a clear performance advantage for the N250, particularly in single-threaded workloads.

On the graphics front, the MicroPC 2 continues to use integrated Intel UHD Graphics with 32 execution units and a video memory frequency of 1.25GHz. The GPU delivers up to 768 GFLOPS of half-precision and 384 GFLOPS of single-precision floating-point performance. According to GPD, GPU performance has improved fivefold compared to the original MicroPC when operating at a 15W TDP.

The new model is also equipped with 16GB of LPDDR5 memory, running at 4800 MT/s and providing a bandwidth of 38.4 GB/s. Storage is handled by a 512GB M.2 2280 SSD with PCIe Gen3×4 support. The motherboard can accommodate double-sided SSDs, including high-capacity drives up to 8TB. There is no built-in capacity limit, and supported SSDs can reach peak read and write speeds of up to 3.94 GB/s.

While GPD has not yet shared the official release date or pricing, the company stated that internal testing for the MicroPC 2 will begin as early as next week.
